Phish Summer Tour 2010: Ticket Updates

In unrelated yet relevant news, Phish has elected to go with Tickethorse.com for the sale of tickets to 2-day Telluride run. In effect, this will be a ticketless event in which concert goers must provide their credit card on-site in order to receive admission to the event. This meets a growing outcry from fans for the band to take action against hasty scalpers that have tainted the ticketing process in recent history (including legal scandals I intend to write about here later involving the WiseGuys).

Needless to say the experiment with this process has both pros and cons, but I am happy to see them attempting something. The obvious pros are keeping out mass scalping and getting tickets into the hands of fans directly. The potential problems I see with this is PTBM tickets becoming the only at-large tickets for this event. For fans shut out of the public sale yet still adamant about attending will have to suffer large premiums in the after market due to scarcity. Thus only adding insult to injury for that shut out of the Lottery.

Of course, many ticket purist will argue that support of scalping perpetuates the process and should not be a practiced when it comes to Phish ticketing anyway. As much as I would like to agree with this utopian idea, I can not help but side with the Colorado (and West Coast) population at large that is being given less than 30,000 tickets to satisfy the demand from this region. Couple this with Telluride being a premiere concert venue with a low capacity and the whole situation becomes a question of Telluride being the proper place to attempt this method.
