The Optimist Creed: Article 3

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Greetings, fellow humans! I hope you all are doing well. Today I'm looking at the third article of the Optimist Creed. This one will be short. The creed is as follows...

Promise yourself...
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

First off, let me get one thing straight. There is worth in every single soul. Every last one.

However, not everyone has a feeling of self-worth. That could be real sad.

I would assume that everyone wants to feel special. Everyone wants to feel important. Everyone wants to feel awesome. Everyone wants to be worth something.

What to do? What to do?

Easy! Make these people feel special. Make them feel important. Make them feel awesome. Make them feel like they are worth something.

Compliment freely. Be scarce with criticism. Encourage people to grow. Love people.

Love, I think, is the best way to help people feel like there is something in them.

Start today!

Any thoughts?

The Optimist Creed: Article 2

Sunday, April 8, 2012

Hey, readers! Happy Easter! I hope you all are having a wonderful day. Meanwhile, it's time for me to do the second of ten posts of me breaking down The Optimist Creed. The creed is as follows; and today, I'm analyzing the second article.

Many people speak negatively of other people. My weakness is complaining about some people. I'm working on it now, though. I'm trying to live by this creed, remember? Most times, when one is verbally putting someone down, he/she is doing it to make him/herself look/feel better.

Even if you're complaining about someone to someone else, you're not speaking health, happiness, or prosperity. You're complaining. Stop.

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue." -Proverbs 18:21

Imagine that. You have the power to kill or revive someone. Which option seems better? I beg you chose the latter.

Personally, when I speak positively about someone, it makes me feel better. When I say something to boost someone's confidence, it boosts my confidence. When I make other people happy, it makes me happy. (Disclaimer: I'm not referring to the losing-yourself-just-to-please-others mess.)

Speak health, happiness, and prosperity to everyone because it's the right thing to do; and in the end, you'll be healthier, happier, and maybe even more prosperous.

Have a great day! Let me know if you have any thoughts!

"Expectation is the bridge to disappointment."

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

My dean said that quote above in the beginning of the first semester, and I believe you can find this quote amongst the quotes in A Supplement to My Favorite Quotes.

Man, I just don't know about this quote. It's right, but it's kind of wrong, too. I really like this quote, though. I say this all the time now as an excuse or a reason to not have expectations of certain things.

Operating under this quote can keep you safe, but at the same time, it's dangerous. Right?

Think about it.

If you don't expect anything from a situation, you won't be disappointed. But what happens when you're okay with people treating you badly because you didn't expect them to treat you well? Even worse, what happens when you're satisfied with failure because you didn't expect success?

I think we should have some sort of standard or expectation for ourselves or when it comes to things that will affect us.

It's tricky, I guess...and I guess I have nothing else to say at this point.

But, thankfully, this is a "Think on This" post, so I'd like you think about it, and comment below to let me know what you think about this quote.

"Expectation in the bridge to disappointment."

Thanks for stopping by! See you again soon. =)

The Optimist Creed: Article 1

Sunday, March 4, 2012

Greetings, fellow humans! Today, I'm gonna start the first of ten posts of me breaking down The Optimist Creed. If you've been reading NIA SPEAKS for a while, you may know that I did a post on this creed back in December of 2010, as a challenge to live by it in 2011.

Well, we all know that it's 2012 now, and I've come to realize that I've kind of strayed from the creed. Now, I'm trying to get back on track, because I think that living by the creed can truly make me and you all happier people. The Optimist Creed is as follows; and today, I'm tackling the first article.

Now, how can one be so strong that nothing can disturb his or her peace of mind? Better yet, what does that even mean?

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." -Philippians 4:6+7

The above verse is one of my favorite passages of Scripture, and the answer to my question.

The way of keeping one's peace of mind is by not worrying, I suppose. I guess that means we should be strong enough not to give into fear...or at least petty worries, if you know what I'm saying.

According to some stats...

40% of the things people worry about about are about things that would never happen.

30% of the things people worry about are about things that have already happened.

12% of the things people worry about are about others' opinions; and criticisms are often made by those that are jealous or insecure. Therefore, unjust criticism is a disguised compliment.

10% of the things people worry about are needless health worries.

8% of the things people worried about are "legitimate."

So, most of the things you worry about aren't even worth the trouble! No wonder why peace of mind can seem so scarce.

I challenge you to chill out on that worry stuff. I'll hit more on it later on the last article of this creed.

Any thoughts?

Until next time...

"Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names."

Thursday, July 7, 2011

Sorry again, readers! I know it's been awhile, but I'm here with another post. Let's get started.

You can find the above quote from John F. Kennedy in My Favorite Quotes (thus far) post that I wrote in February. My quote list has grown a little more since then, but that's not what we're here for.

We're here to talk about this brilliant quote. "Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names." This quote has some sort of je ne sais quoi. There's just something about it! It's so clever. It sounds almost like something a sage would say.

Let's dig into it, shall we?

I'm going to give you my interpretation, starting with "forgive".

According to the Oxford Dictionary (three cheers for the Oxford Dictionary), to forgive is to stop feeling angry or resentful toward someone for an offense, flaw, or mistake.

So, if someone did something wrong to you, to forgive is to let "it" go. With that being said, forgiving your enemies is basically letting go of whatever they did wrong to you. Awesome.

Oh, and let us remember that forgiveness isn't really for the other person. Forgiveness is for you. Sure one could feel a lot better knowing that you forgave him or her of his or her wrong, but at the end of the day, you can't control other people's feelings. A person could feel sad, guilty, or ecstatic, but if you hold on to whatever he or she did to you, it'll have some control over you. There's no need for that. As soon as you forgive, you are setting yourself free from that burden.

Moving on to...

"...but never forget their names."

First off, the word "but" is used to introduce something that will contrast what has already been mentioned.

Sometimes when I hear or read "but", I replace it with a "Wait a minute! Wait a minute!" or something of the sort. So far I'm reading: Forgive your enemies. Wait a minute! NEVER FORGET THEIR NAMES!

Catching my drift?

This idea is indeed going against the "forgive and forget" idea under which many people operate, which makes the idea of forgiving but not forgetting seem rather smart to me. I mean, it's almost naïve to forgive AND forget. Why erase from your memory something that could help you make better decisions about trust, how you choose your friends, or any other situation? Use the time that caused you to forgive someone as a reference to help you in life.

I feel like I'm straying a little bit. Let's get back on course.

Overall, I understand the quote to be interpreted as follows: Let go of whatever wrong that was done to you, but don't forget the people who did the wrong to you, because they could easily wrong you again.

Do you think I'm understanding JFK correctly? Do you agree or disagree with this quote at all? I want to hear what YOU have to say.

I hope you have a great day!

"Be who you are, and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."

Thursday, February 3, 2011

That quote from Dr. Seuss is part of the header for NIA SPEAKS, and that is what I will be talking about starting...NOW!

I'm gonna break this post down into 3 categories:
CATEGORY ONE- Be who you are.
CATEGORY TWO- Say what you feel.
CATEGORY THREE- Figure out who matters and who doesn't.

Easy right? Okay. Let's get started.

CATEGORY ONE- Be who you are.
"Be yourself. Everything else is already taken." -Oscar Wilde
I think it is SOOOOO important for people to stay true to themselves. I'm sure you have heard it all before, but no one else exists in the world who is just like you. So why not give the world a different flavor of person? (Did that flavor thing make sense?) Anyways, it really doesn't make sense to me why people try to act like something they're not. I mean, I understand the slight issue when someone is trying to find him/herself, or someone might not be comfortable with him/herself, but overall, everyone is unique, everyone is special, and everyone should be themselves, because everyone is beautiful. It saddens me to see people hide themselves simply because they don't fit the images that the media is constantly pushing. Like I said, everyone is beautiful. People everywhere need to dig deep and figure out what's great about themselves. There's no need to lose yourself. Find yourself, keep yourself, and BE yourself.

CATEGORY TWO- Say what you feel.
There really shouldn't be some sort of hindrance that prevents people from saying what they want to say. I think too many people keep quiet way too often. (Disclaimer: I do think there are times when certain remarks or questions should be withheld for the sake of the circumstance or atmosphere, but people have to be their own judge on what's appropriate.) With the exception of that disclaimer there, SAY WHAT YOU FEEL! Why not? I told you guys in my last post that I'm the type of girl who (almost) all the time says what she wants to say when it's appropriate. If I have an opinion that I want to be heard, I will make it audible. Say what you need to say, because keeping your thoughts bottled up inside isn't really the best thing for you as a person. Though it could lead to negative things being said, it's important that everyone exercises their unalienable right of the freedom of speech. SPEAK UP! Just please don't say anything too crazy that will cause a war or something. That is one of the main reasons why I started NIA SPEAKS. I wanted to be heard. I wanted to somehow get my thoughts and opinions out there, and I'm glad that this blog has given me an opportunity to do so.

CATEGORY THREE- Figure out who matters and who doesn't.
The difficult thing when it comes to saying what's on your mind is deciding who matters and who doesn't. The part of the quote that says, "those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." is my favorite part! I think that's also what got the quote to become so popular, because it's kind of true. The people who get offended that you tell the truth are the people who shouldn't matter, because obviously they can't handle what you have to say. Those who should matter to you are the ones who listen to what you have to say even if they don't agree with it. No matter what you say, there will always be at least one person who disagrees with you. I'm not saying critique is bad. It could open your eyes to help you realize something else. But if someone is always trying to shut down what you have to say, ignore them. Don't let anyone get to you or keep you from speaking up. It's your voice not theirs.

Hopefully this post has some sort of meaning to you. I just really wanted to write something about this quote. What are your thoughts on this quote?

2010 just got dumped. Soooo 2011, how about those digits?

Monday, January 3, 2011

I'm THANKING GOD for letting me make it through another year. However, I must address the whole "New Years Cliché". Around the New Year season, almost everyone says, "This year is gonna be different than last year." Many people expect their mistakes to be somehow erased with the coming of January 1. Let's be serious. Not a thing will be different this year by just saying, "2011 is gonna be different." You're basically saying, "Blah blah blah." Simply talking is not gonna bring about change. If you're going to be passive, you're going to end up doing the same old routine, and New Year's Resolutions will be given up in a matter of weeks...or days. If you truly want 2011 to be a better year, you must be proactive in your decisions to change, or else, 2011 will be just another repeat.

So, I encourage you to be active this year. Make sure your resolutions don't falter by the wayside. Do your best to make yourself a better person! You can even look at The Optimist Creed as a starting guide if you have nothing planned.

Do whatever you have to do. Like Oprah Winfrey says, "Live your best life."

Have a great year!

The Optimist Creed

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

I saw this posted in a nail salon while I was waiting to get my nails done. I felt like I should share it with you all, because everyone can use some optimism in their lives. Read it, think on it, and try to apply this to your life. I'm sure if everyone followed The Optimist Creed, the world would be filled with better people.

What are your thoughts on this creed?

Conformity

Saturday, June 26, 2010

"A man must consider what a rich realm he abdicates when he becomes a conformist." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Conformity. The compliance with standards, rules, or laws has taken over individuals so that they can be socially accepted. Ironically, society pushes uniqueness because people are free. But when people are free to do what they please, they usually imitate each other. It is most times easier to conform and become the modern day cliché but is it comfortable? Is it even natural?

My friend, Taryn, jokingly said that "We must destroy the status quo because the status is not quo." And my response to that was, "What does quo even mean?!" I couldn't figure out a definite definition of the word "quo" but some might not know what the phrase "status quo" even means. The term is derived from the original Latin "statu quo". Literally translating to "the state in which", the Latin term means the current or existing state of affairs. The way to maintain this status quo is to keep things the way they presently are. But the only way to keep everything the same is if everyone does the same thing and no one changes...right?

An unknown author said, "Don't think you're on the right road just because it's a well-beaten path." And Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Do not follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail." If you feel like something could be better, do something different! Because, as Doug Floyd said, "You don't get harmony when everybody sings the same note." Which is true. Harmony in a piece is more complex than just a melody but with harmony you might end up with a better song.

Remember, following someone's footsteps isn't always wrong. Just remember to BE YOUR OWN PERSON. Be-YOU-tiful. Always. Doing that is extremely important and you should never lose yourself. There is no need to completely conform because when it comes to living your own life, originality is vital.

So if someone tells you to stick to the status quo, just do what you feel is right. Don't let the idea of conformity enslave you.

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Seuss

FAILURE: When your best just isn't good enough

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

How do you deal with failure? Not the kind when you only halfheartedly did something but the failure that hurts. The failure that stings. That time when your put practically your life, your love, your all into something and STILL get unsuccessful results. That time when you spent forever and a day trying to perfect something, trying to sharpen your skill...spending SO LONG getting better at something, even spending what seems like forever on a friendship that appears to be dying, only to be returned with an empty hand. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT FAILURE? Especially when you KNOW for a fact you did your absolute best?

Day after day some failures of mine still gnaw at the very core of my being. And actually right now, I'm writing as a response to my frustration with those failures (so sorry if this isn't the top-notch type of writing). But failing for me is SOOOOOOO different when it comes to putting my all into it or not. Is it that way for you? Or the same? I should assume it would feel different. Or at least it should. Because if you only halfheartedly went into something and didn't succeed, maybe you should've just gone all out in the first place.

But back to my question...How do YOU deal with failure? I've realized that people deal with failure primarily in three different ways...

The first, and probably the most common, way that people use to deal with failure is to blame the failure on someone else or give excuses. Giving up on whatever the task is usually goes along with this. It's so much easier to blame other people for our faults, isn't it? But why do we do it so often? Who do we think we're fooling? Not ourselves! Of course not because most likely we know who to blame. Ourselves. The most common excuse for a failure is "It's not fair!". Other ones are "I'm too young" or "I'm too old" and even "It's too hard!". With that type of attitude, eventually the person will give up and instead of achieving his or her, goal they claim that it's just too far out of reach and settle for less.

The second way people deal with failure is by doing the same thing repeatedly. A brilliant man named Albert Einstein once said that insanity is "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". People are straight up insane then because I've seen it a lot. Shoot...I've done it before many times. But, again, why do we do it? Will those goals ever be reached? Perhaps, if they're aren't big goals. But if you're trying to achieve something big and what you're doing isn't working, doing the same thing again most likely will not work...you might not even make the slightest progress. If you keep repeating the same thing, you're gonna get the same results. That's that.

Finally, the third way to deal with failure is to use the failure as "feedback", evaluate that feedback, change your strategy, and go at it again until you get what you what. THIS is the best way to overcome failure. Taking that failure as a notification that your strategy was either ineffective or you didn't put enough into the situation. You will get faster if you keep running, but only if you PUSH yourself to go faster. Perseverance is also a big part of achieving success. Thomas Edison took 10,000 times to successfully inventing the lightbulb. When his goal was finally reached and he was asked if he was upset with the times he failed, he said he discovered 9,999 ways NOT to invent the lightbulb. This shows persistence and also shows that nothing can be completely useless, it could always serve as a bad example.

I threw many thoughts into this today but what I want you to take away is this...
See your failure as feedback instead, change your strategy immediately, and go for it again. If it doesn't work the first time, repeat the process of evaluating and changing and don't stop until you get the results that you want. Use the feedback to help change your approach to a situation in order to achieve your goal. A failure isn't a waste either, you can always refer back to it as a way NOT to do things. Stay persistent and stay consistent. Understand and apply that concept to your life and you WILL be successful. I can guarantee it.

"Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson

Sunday, April 18, 2010

WHENEVER Richard Cory went down town,

We people on the pavement looked at him:

He was a gentleman from sole to crown,

Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,

And he was always human when he talked;

But still he fluttered pulses when he said,

"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich—yes, richer than a king,

And admirably schooled in every grace:

In fine, we thought that he was everything

To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,

And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;

And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,

Went home and put a bullet through his head.

Richard Cory, in this poem, represents the everyday celebrity. Not just the everyday celebrity, but the everyday celebrity that everyone else wants to be. Many people look up to those celebrities and there are many people who do almost everything and anything to be like them.

Being a celebrity does have its perks, but the reality is, it has many cons too. That's something that the average person doesn't realize. There's a lot of pressure when everyone is watching everything you do...and PRIVACY! The precious right to privacy is something that is hard to keep when you're in the spotlight and very few celebs can keep their personal lives on the down low.

To make this short, I'm not surprised if there are many celebs out there that want to be "normal" people again and what the "normal" people don't realize that even their idols don't have it all together (no offense to the celebrities out there). The bottom line is, there's a lot of weight that comes when you are famous and for some people, like Richard Cory, they feel that weight is too much to bare.

The main thing I want you to take away from this is that everything has flaws and you should be content with who you are as a person. I'm not trying to discourage anybody from chasing their dreams of being rich and famous or anything like that. The point I'm trying to make is that if you're trying to get into something like that, that you at first become aware of the responsibility and pressures that come with the job. Nobody wants to end up like Richard Cory, right?

Tomorrow: You're only a day away?

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

"Tomorrow, tomorrow. I love ya, tomorrow. You're only a day away"

When I was little, I always loved that song from Annie, probably my favorite one of them all. But now since I'm older and have a little bit more knowledge about how life works, I'm starting to doubt the song...

We all know that there has been at least one time in life where we've said, "I'll do that tomorrow" or SOMETHING of that nature. The fact is, tomorrow is not promised to any one of us. Matter fact, the next second isn't guaranteed, honestly. I just came from a really great conference in Columbus, Ohio and during such a great, uplifting time, two kids received a phone call that their father had died. I don't know about you, but that stuff is straight up depressing!

Things like that make me sad but also so thankful for my life and the life of my loved ones. The truth is, the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, and anyone's life can be done at any given moment...whether expected or not. This is why we shouldn't waste time and live up to our full potential and get it together.

Of course, with that thought in mind we lead to the thought of "Life's too short". Well honestly, I kinda have a problem with that statement too (but my view of it is kinda contradictory). I feel like too many people say that life is too short when in fact, life is the LONGEST thing you'll EVER have to do. Ever. The twist is this: Just because life is the longest thing you'll have to do doesn't mean it'll be as long as you planned. Everyone knows that one's life may be shorter than another one's and that one's death may have come sooner than anticipated. So instead of wasting your life because you know it's the longest task you'll have, don't spend like you have all the time in the world to do what you want to do.

This is really short, but let's wrap this up. Basically what I want you to carry away from this is KNOW THAT TOMORROW IS NOT PROMISED, always BE THANKFUL FOR THE LIFE OF YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES, and just because life is the longest thing you'll ever have to do, DON'T TAKE TIME FOR GRANTED.

I close with this quote I heard from Master Oogway in the movie, Kung Fu Panda: "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift, that's why it's called present."

Use that gift and take advantage of TODAY!
